ADR and Intel Deep Mining Safety Remote Inspector operating the data capture system

The deeper we dig, the greater the risk. As mining operations extend further underground, the environment becomes increasingly hostile. Unstable ground, toxic gases, and post-blast exclusion zones make these areas dangerous for human inspection. Yet, the data these areas hold is critical for operations.

For years, the industry faced a difficult trade-off: risk human safety to gather data, or operate blindly.

Today, Australian Droid + Robot (ADR) is removing that trade-off entirely. We are proud to announce a strategic collaboration with Intel Corporation, combining our rugged robotics platform with Intel’s world-class edge computing capabilities to keep people out of harm’s way.

Computing at the Edge The Explora XL is not just a remote-controlled car; it is an autonomous data center on wheels. Operating deep underground often means operating without a reliable cloud connection. This is where Intel’s technology changes the game.

By integrating Intel® Xeon® processors and Intel® Core™ Ultra processors directly onboard our robots, we enable “Edge Computing.” The robot doesn’t just collect data—it analyzes 3D LiDAR scans, thermal imaging, and gas levels in real-time, right there in the mine.

“Intel has technologies and they have the ideas,” says Bhupesh Agrawal, GM, Enterprise Edge at Intel. “The use case is very interesting because the robot is going in the mine… and the data is being analyzed using that Intel Xeon power. It allows enterprises to analyze data at the edge and make real-time decisions.”

Safety Without Compromise Our CTO, Mathew Allan, puts it simply: “If people don’t need to be in hazardous environments, they shouldn’t be.”

With this new capability, the Explora XL can traverse mud, water, and uneven terrain to inspect blast zones and unstable shafts. If equipment is lost, the cost is financial. If a human is lost, the cost is immeasurable. This partnership ensures that human safety is never compromised for the sake of data.
